Exploring our local California cheese scene is a delightful culinary experience. But it is also a journey that opens doors to the world of grazing animals, cultural heritage, traditional foods, artisan makers and the dairymen and women who keep our historic milkshed thriving. Each visit to a cheese maker provides an opportunity to learn about the craft and dedication that goes into making each wheel of cheese.
Cowgirl Creamery, Point Reyes Farmstead, Marin French, Valley Ford Cheese and Tomales Farmstead are just a few of the superb cheesemaking operations in our region.
So why not spend a day or two on the cheese trail exploring “cheese country” on the Sonoma-Marin coast? Take a drive over rolling hills, through our stunningly beautiful pastoral zone that lead to the promise of delectable cheese. Stop to visit artisan producers, grazing cows and fascinating people with every curve. Then come back inland and book a stay at Silver Penny Farm as your home base!
On day two, consider turning inland to visit Vella Cheese in the charming town of Sonoma, capturing both the history of the Bear Flag Republic and the legacy of one of the founding Italian cheesemaking families of the region. And don’t miss the many wineries along this route that offer excellent tours and tastings.
